Calzone vs. Stromboli: What's the Difference?

At Bizzaro's Italian Restaurant, one of the questions we hear most often is, "What's the difference between a calzone and a stromboli?" They may look similar at first glance, but each has its own personality—and both are absolutely delicious.

The Calzone: An Italian Classic

A calzone is the original Italian favorite. Made from fresh pizza dough, it's folded into a half-moon shape and baked until golden brown. Inside, you'll find a rich blend of creamy ricotta, mozzarella, and your favorite fillings like pepperoni, sausage, grilled chicken, or fresh vegetables.

Traditionally, marinara sauce is served on the side, so every bite gets the perfect dip. The result is a cheesy, comforting meal that's crispy on the outside and irresistibly soft on the inside.

The Stromboli: Packed with Flavor

A stromboli takes a different approach. Instead of folding the dough, we roll it around layers of premium mozzarella, savory meats, and fresh ingredients before baking it to a beautiful golden finish.

Because it's rolled, every slice is filled with delicious layers of melted cheese and flavorful ingredients. It's perfect for sharing—or keeping all to yourself!

So What's the Difference?

The biggest differences are simple:

  • Calzones are folded into a half-moon and traditionally include ricotta cheese along with toppings of your choce.
  • Strombolis are rolled into a log and usually feature mozzarella with layers of Italian meats and vegetables.

Which One Is Right for You?

If you're craving a rich, cheesy Italian classic, order a calzone. If you love layers of melted cheese and hearty fillings in every bite, go with a stromboli.

Of course, there's no wrong answer. At Bizzaro's, we make both with fresh dough, premium cheeses, quality ingredients, and the care that's been part of our kitchen from the very beginning.  We also make all of our Calzones and Stromboli to order so feel free to customize to your desires.
